UK sees weak online retail sales growth in August

September 16, 2015 | By RetailME Bureau

Online retail sales in the UK recorded its weakest growth, since 15 years, in August, indicate latest figures from IMRG, UK’s industry association for e-retail.

Last month online sales increased just 5% – down 6% on July this year. While figures are up if compared with August 2014 – recording a 14% rise in sales – it marks the weakest performance since the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index was launched in 2000.

“The performance could be the result of a later August Bank Holiday, which will be included in September’s index. Looking ahead, we expect September’s index results to be back on track with our 2015 growth forecast,” says Tina Spooner, IMRG chief information officer.

Across different sectors, clothing recorded its lowest ever August growth, with sales up just 5%, while sales of electricals soared just 6% – a 1% fall on last year. However, health and beauty, gifts and home sectors were up 30%, 23% and 31%, respectively. Sales made via mobile devices saw a rise of 33% in August.
