Emaar launches ‘Dubai Trolley’

Marking a significant first in the region, Emaar Properties is redefining smart urban mobility with the launch of a world-class trolley tram system in Downtown Dubai, its flagship mega-development. A convenient and fun-oriented ‘hop-on hop-off’ transit system, the all-new Dubai Trolley will add tremendous value to Downtown Dubai residents and visitors by offering them an attractive and user-friendly commuting service within the world’s most prestigious square kilometre.

To span a distance of 7 km, Dubai Trolley will serve as an exotic, easy-to-access connecting link between the various iconic attractions in Downtown Dubai including Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall. Aligned along Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, the first phase of Dubai Trolley will cover a distance of 1 km and will have three stations to offer passengers easy access to The Dubai Mall and The Address Downtown Dubai and Vida Downtown Dubai hotels.

With The Dubai Mall welcoming millions of visitors every month and Downtown Dubai’s hotels recording strong occupancy levels, Dubai Trolley will add to the convenience of residents and visitors in traversing the 500-acre development described as ‘The Centre of Now.’ They can also effortlessly access Souk Al Bahar, The Dubai Fountain, several residential towers and myriad restaurants on Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, one of the world’s most vibrant thoroughfares.

“Dubai Trolley is a smart urban mobility service that further builds on the trolley tram systems that are in use in several cities across the US and Europe. While they were a game-changer in public transport when first invented in the 1880s by introducing a new concept to urban mobility, they are now largely used as tourist attractions. We have innovated further on both design and technology, incorporating world-class features, for Dubai Trolley. An environmentally sustainable system that supports the development vision of the UAE, Dubai Trolley brings a convenient and user-friendly transit mode to Downtown Dubai. It will add tremendous value to residents and visitors, enabling them to effortlessly access the world-class attractions in the world’s most prestigious square kilometre,” says Ahmad Al Matrooshi, managing director of Emaar Properties.

Initially, Dubai Trolley will carry 74 passengers in double-decker trams that have the provision of open-deck and air-conditioned seating. The trams are elegantly designed to complement the Arabesque architectural features of Downtown Dubai. In a polished design, they are resplendent in bright red with aesthetic gold pin-stripes and green trim colours. During winter, the glass window panels of the trolley tram will be removed for the added comfort of the passengers. Dubai Trolley will travel at an operational speed of 16 km/hr and has a maximum speed of 80 km/hr, which can be regulated according to requirement. Convenient crossings will be provided along the tramway to facilitate safe and easy pedestrian movement. Being electric and hydrogen powered, the smart and innovative Dubai Trolley has practically zero-emission.

Dubai Trolley Terminus near Old Town Island will also feature several F&B offerings, adding to the convenience of passengers. The well-appointed air-conditioned stations are designed to reflect the architectural attributes of Downtown Dubai, and will add to the comfort of passengers as they wait for the trolley tram service. Work on the first phase of trolley-tracks and Dubai Trolley depots has already commenced. The first phase is scheduled for completion early next year.
