City Centre Almaza

City Centre Almaza, a Majid Al Futtaim shopping mall in Egypt, has received LEED-Gold certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC). The certification was awarded to City Centre Almaza – a project by CallisonRTKL (CRTKL) – commending its sustainable design, construction and operation standards.

The project comes in line with CRTKL’s commitment to performance-driven-design organisation, applying technical advancements to enhance and optimise design solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and productive environment. With the use of sustainable strategies and designs, energy savings, water efficiency and CO2 emissions reduction, City Centre Almaza has been classified as one of high environmental quality.

Spanning 1.3 million sqft, City Centre Almaza was built by a joint venture between Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) and the Egyptian company Hassan Allam Construction. According to CCC, the energy-efficient systems implemented at the shopping mall save 14.6% of electricity. The development also used recycled and locally sourced materials throughout the design and construction processes.

This sustainability-first approach comes as countries in the region have embedded sustainability goals into their policy planning, and put in place the necessary building blocks that address sustainability challenges effectively.
