The world’s largest building has opened in the Sichuan province in southwestern China. The New Century Global Centre, officially the largest freestanding building in the world, houses office units, hotels, retail, leisure and entertainment complexes, including a shopping mall, Mediterranean village, 14-screen IMAX Cineplex, ice-skating rink and artificial beach.
The 18.9 million sqft megastructure, which took three years to complete, has a huge water park called Paradise Island at the centre of the building. Around 4.3 million sqft of the building is dedicated to shopping.
According to the Exhibition and Travel Group, the owners of New Century Global Centre, the building is large enough to house the equivalent of 20 Sydney Opera Houses and is almost three times the size of the Pentagon in Washington DC.
The New Century Global Centre is at the heart of a new planned area of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. Its opening has been timed to coincide with the expansion of a new subway line for the area and the planned construction of a new airport set for completion in 2020.
