No delivery for 30 minutes during Iftar, says Careem

Careem has decided to pause its grocery, food and other delivery services for 30 minutes every day during Iftar time throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan to give delivery executives (or Captains as they are called) time to rest and break their fast. In addition, Iftar meals will be provided to Captains at least three times a week during Ramadan in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan and Egypt.

Careem has also launched new donation features on the app to support communities in need during Ramadan. Customers in the UAE can now donate AED3 to the “1 Billion Meals Endowment” campaign with each ride they book when choosing Careem’s ‘Ramadan’ car option. The campaign was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, with the aim to create the largest Ramadan sustainable food aid endowment fund. The amount is automatically included in the car booking price and is donated directly to the fund.

The ‘Ramadan’ car option is also available in KSA, Jordan, Pakistan, Egypt, Iraq and Kuwait, enabling customers in each market to easily donate to different local charities such as Tkiyet Um Ali in Jordan, The Citizen’s Fund in Pakistan and the Food Bank in Egypt.

“Many communities in our region are in desperate need of our support and we feel a deep sense of responsibility towards them, especially during Ramadan. We’re humbled at the opportunity to empower and encourage our colleagues and customers to give back during the Holy Month, and we’re grateful to collaborate with local and regional organisations including the Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum Global Initiatives to make it happen,” said Mudassir Sheikha, CEO and Co-founder of Careem.

Careem has also partnered with Dar Al Ber to provide food assistance to underserved communities in Dubai during Ramadan. Customers in the UAE can purchase and donate food baskets with items such as rice, flour, beans and cooking oil through Careem’s grocery delivery service. The baskets will be distributed to communities across old Dubai by Careem employees in collaboration with Dar Al Ber. Careem is also restoring the popular “Eat 2 Fill a Plate” campaign in the UAE and KSA where 495 participating restaurants on Careem donate AED2 per order and the proceeds will go to the “1 billion meals endowment” initiative in the UAE.
