Dubai-based mall developer and retailer Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) has appointed Simon Azzam as the CEO of its communities’ business unit at MAF Properties. Azzam joined the company on January 1, 2014.

George Kostas, CEO, MAF Properties, which holds a portfolio of 16 shopping malls, 11 hotels and three mixed-use communities in MENA, says, “Azzam is a strong addition to our team as we seek to further diversify our business and grow our master-planned communities’ portfolio. With over two decades of experience in both the UAE and the broader MENA region, his knowledge of the local market, attention to local consumer trends and desires coupled with his leadership skills will greatly enhance our existing team. I have no doubt he will play an instrumental role during our next phase of growth.”

Azzam has experience of many years in the region, most recently as CEO of Abu Dhabi-based Bloom Properties, which has mixed-use projects spanning Abu Dhabi and Iraq. Previously, he was the CEO of Dubai-based Union Properties, where he spent twenty three years. He has played an instrumental role in growing the company into one of the city’s leading property development businesses with signature projects including Motor City, Index Tower, Ritz Carlton DIFC and Green Community and Uptown Mirdif.
