Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona announces salary increase amid inflation

Spanish omnichannel supermarket chain Mercadona has announced salary increase amid inflation that comes into effect from this month (January 2023).

In an official statement the Management Committee at Mercadona in accordance with the company’s Total Quality Model has approved a salary increase for its entire workforce of 96,000 across Spain and Portugal in line with the CPI (Consumer Price Index). This includes not only base salary as stipulated in the Collective Agreement, but also for the workforce’s total salary including the corresponding complementary payments.

The aim is to maintain the purchasing power of all people who form part of Mercadona because they are the “greatest asset.” The company believes “the more satisfied ‘The Boss’, as the company internally calls the customer, the further Mercadona moves forward.”

Knowing that having increased salaries in 2022 by 6.5% in Spain and 2.7% in Portugal would mean an increase to its fixed costs, the company has implemented a series of measures. Among them, improvements in digitalisation of its processes and the commitment to raise awareness among the workforce about analysing the costs that they are involved in. These measures have already led to a 9% increase in productivity and cost savings of more than Euro 200 million in 2022.
