Decathlon unveils concept that could reshape sports shoe category

Global sportswear brand Decathlon, in collaboration with HP and Lonati Group, has created a shoe concept with the potential to reshape athletic footwear category.

Traditionally, shoe production requires numerous parts, adhesive materials and a significant workforce. In their latest innovation, Decathlon along with its partners have developed a sports shoe that embodies innovation, personalisation and circularity.

By leveraging 3D printing, the shoe can be produced locally, reducing transportation emissions while supporting local economies. The manufacturing process allows for stock lifetime optimisation and enables on-demand production, thus reducing waste. By utilising a glue-free assembly method, the shoe can be easily repaired when damaged, therein also extending the lifespan of the product. Moreover, the use of a single material, TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), for the grip and cushion parts enhances the shoe’s recyclability. What’s more, the shoe is highly customisable, enabling consumers to personalise their footwear.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with HP’s Personalization & 3D Printing business and Lonati Group on this project that exemplifies our commitment to sustainability. By leveraging the potential of 3D printing, we are revolutionising the shoe manufacturing process, offering consumers customized, recyclable and locally produced footwear,” Phillipe Seille, Exploration Leader at Decathlon stated.
