Battersea Power Station: regeneration of a landmark project

A landmark location, the Battersea Power Station – which used to generate power for a third of London until switched off in 1982 – is being regenerated into an exciting mixed-use destination. The project worth £9 billion will see the creation of a vibrant community of shops, restaurants, culture and leisure venues alongside homes and offices.

It took over three decades to revitalise this project. According to Sam Cotton, head of retail leasing for Battersea Power Station, it is the largest revitalisation project in London and one of the largest in Europe. “We are building a brand-new zone one tube station as part of the existing western branch of the metro line. We are trying to create a completely new environment in probably one of the most recognisable buildings in London. Pink Floyd helped us create an album cover to promote the project worldwide, sharing the story of what Battersea Power Station means to London.”

The regeneration of Battersea Power Station is happening in a phased manner. Circus West Village opened in 2017 and is now a thriving hub of independent restaurants, cafés, bars as well as leisure offerings including The Turbine Theatre, Birdie’s Crazy Golf, Boom Cycle and Archlight Cinema.

Most recently, Battersea Power Station has announced a host of brands set to open in its second phase, Grade II that will house over 100 shops, restaurants and cafés, a 2,000-person capacity events venue and a unique chimney lift experience.

Adding more, Cotton stated, “People from around the world are seeking authentic experiences. We are turning one of the chimneys of the Battersea Power Station into a rooftop garden that will offer a stunning panoramic view of central London. We will have mono-brand retail stores in the building, in addition to partnering with speciality coffee houses, bakers and various other home-grown concepts to create authentic food experiences. And we will try to make shopping seamless in our facility.”

Set to launch in 2021, Grade II will house Finlay & Co, Hugo Boss, Jo Malone London, Kiehl’s, MAC Cosmetics, Royal Selangor, Space NK, Uniqlo and Watches of Switzerland, to name a few. Wjat’s more, Apple’s 500,000 sqft London Campus and business members club will also open in Grade II. Moreover, the second Archlight Cinema and BXR London gym will also open at Battersea Power Station.

Moreover, the regeneration of Battersea Power Station will create 20,000 new jobs, generating long-term career opportunities for local residents.

Notably, Battersea Power Station sold over £120 million worth of property in 2019, with a significant percentage bought by Gulf investors, especially from the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
